More About the ‘Peeps’ Lottery on Twitter

The ‘peep’ lottery on the popular social networking website Twitter has become popular in less than a month. During the past two years social networking sites have been used by savvy marketers to attract younger customers. Politicians use Twitter to get their messages out and state their positions on important issues. A project by a Canadian student morphed into “The Internet’s People Powered Lottery” or ‘peep lottery. Canadian college student Peter Danihel, 22, launched his website in early November 2009 to see just how far his project would go in the virtual world.

The ‘peep’ lottery is based on a Twitter account that serves as a ‘ticket.’ As the site increases in popularity the jackpot grows. The jackpot is funded by advertising revenue and unlike most lotteries participation is free. The goal of the ‘peep’ lottery is to become the most followed Twitter user. The odds of winning the ‘peep’ lottery on Twitter is 500% better than those offered by state and national lotteries. Danihel explains his reasons for establishing the ‘peeps’ lottery; “When I was building Peep Lotto’s business model, my primary objective was to appeal to the average person. I wanted to create an advertising company that would be like none other in the industry. In today’s world, there are hundreds of pay per click advertising businesses competing against each other and I didn’t feel like becoming ‘another one of them’. Being able to start an actual business coming from rock bottom would be one heck of an experience for me as I’m essentially starting Peep Lotto with nothing more than my computer and marketing knowledge.”

Danihel says his lottery will give advertisers the opportunity to reach potential customers and stimulate the economy. He also said he wanted to give the general public the “opportunity to win a lottery that isn’t astronomical.” If you have a Twitter account you can participate in this unusual lottery. It’s easy to create an account on Twitter and the jackpot can be monitored by logging into your individual account.

The Twitter lottery should come as no surprise. Most European lotteries now allow players to purchase online lottery tickets. The move to allow players to buy online lottery tickets has been very popular with tech savvy lottery players. In the US some states are taking steps to allow players to buy lottery tickets online. Lottery officials in several states are moving their lotteries into the 21st century.
